At East School, we are in the midst of our first full year of incorporating Makerspace into our schedule and are looking to build for the future. Our goal is to add more equipment, tools, materials and project ideas to expand opportunities for all students. We are hopeful that someday the Makerspace opportunities can be expanded to include after school programs.
We have benefited from several donations of materials and equipment. We are grateful for the donations we have received because funding for the Makerspace is not a part of the school’s operating budget. We will continue to partner with the PTO and staff to gather the materials we need. Here are some examples of equipment we are hoping to add in the future as we continue to build the Makerspace room.
Fabrication
CNC Machine/Router - a computer controlled machine that can create precise parts and pieces from a variety of materials that includes wood, foam board and plastics. Students will learn how to create a design on a computer that will be created by the CNC machine.
Laser Cutter - a desktop machine that allows for precise cutting for fabric and other textiles. Students can create a digital design that can be cut or engraved on a variety of materials.
3D Printers - additional 3D printers to allow for more student access to using CAD software to create models and projects that can be created using the 3D printers.
Hand tools - students can learn how to use basic hand tools that include screwdrivers, drills, saws and other tools to create their own projects.
Furniture/Storage
We are looking to add appropriate storage for the variety of materials that the students use in the Makerspace classroom. It is also our goal to add tables that are more appropriate for the type of hands on projects that we are planning for students.
Materials
In addition to using recycled materials in the projects, there are times when we will use wood, foam boards and related materials to create a project.
Please contact Tony Keady (akeady@hinghamschools.org) if you have more specific questions or idea for the Makerspace.
